Wednesday marked the final day for the Boy’s Tennis Regional Tournament. Justin Freund, Mason Burton, Ian Lovern, and Zack Hampton were all set to begin their semifinal matches. Also, number one and two doubles were in the semifinals as well. All three of these singles matches ended successfully for the Beavers, putting each player into the finals. However, only the number one doubles team made it through the semifinals. The number two doubles team of Freund/Burton lost in the most exciting match of the tournament to Oak Hill. In the Finals, Ian Lovern and Justin Freund both played Oak Hill. Zack Hampton faced off against a player from Shady Springs. Hampton and Lovern were both successful, winning 8-4 and 8-5. Justin Freund lost unfortunately, falling 8-0 to Oak Hill. The boys ended the Regionals in second place over all, with two Championships.

The regional Tournament for High School Tennis began Monday. The Boys Team traveled to Concord University in hopes of capturing their 3rd Regional title in 4 years. The day started off disappointingly, as the number three doubles team of Brian Cameron and Tyler Myers fell in the first round to Independence. However, the rest of the day was much more successful for the Beavers. Ian Lovern, Zack Hampton, and Justin Freund all won their singles matches 8-0. Mason Burton likewise won, but at 8-2. The top two dubles teams, Lovern/Hampton and Freund/Burton also were quite dominant, both winning 8-0. All six of these positions begin their semi-final on Wednesday.

Tennis Teams Off to a Strong Start

This spring, Bluefield High School has two more dominating tennis teams. The girls are off to a 4-0 start and the boys are now 3-1. In the first match against Princeton, neither team dropped a set. Both scores were 7 for Bluefield and 0 for Princeton. The next two games were slightly more challenging, but Bluefield managed to win both for boys and girls. It was not until yesterday, against Oakhill, that the boys were handed our first loss. While the girls remain unbeaten, the boys lost 3-4. However, Justin Freund, Ian Lovern, and Zack Hampton remain unbeaten in singles.
The boys look to bounce back today against Westerville South, an Ohio High School on a week long tour of tennis in West Virginia. It is a match that has been played for the last three years, with Bluefield coming out on top twice. It is always a close match, as Westerville is a strong team. Thursday, the girls are back in action. Both teams play Independence on Friday, a regional powerhouse. Fans are always appreciated, so come out to support the tennis teams.

Today, 3/19/12 was our first tennis match of the season. We played Princeton. Even though this match doesn’t count towards our regionals, we still gave it our all. Princeton is a triple A school so it was not a huge match. All of the girls were nervous at first because it was our first match, but who wouldn’t be? We all pulled through and ended up with a team score of 7-0. Victoria Burton won her singles match 8-1. Molly Lovern won her singles match 8-1. Claire Bailey won her singles match 8-4. Alex Lewis won her match 8-4. Victoria Burton and Alex Lewis won their doubles match 8-0. Molly Lovern and Claire Bailey won their doubles match 8-0. Also, Brooke Cundiff and Borden Thomas won their doubles match with no score available.

Girls' Tennis Season
Article by Claire Bailey

On February 25th the girls’ tennis team started their first practice. We have nine girls on our team this year. Those girls are Victoria Burton, Molly Lovern, Claire Bailey, Alex Lewis, Brooke Cundiff, Borden Thomas, Danite Belay, Emma Cole, and Autumn Taylor. Even though we lost a lot of girls last year because of graduation, we hope to have just as a successful year. Our first match is on Monday March 19th, against Princeton High School. Until then we are conditioning and playing challenge matches to be ready. In all, we cannot wait to see what this tennis season has in store.
