Senior Andrew Siegel threw a one-hitter
against River View last evening as the Bluefield Beavers took an
8-1 Senior Night win in their regular season finale over the
visiting Raiders. After a scoreless first inning, Bluefield
scored a run in the second and another in the fifth, while
crossing home plate twice in the third, fourth and sixth frames,
taking an 8-0 advantage into the top of the seventh. Siegel had
not allowed a hit, or a base on balls, through six innings. The
pitcher led off the second, drawing a walk before giving way to
courtesy runner Randy Maxey, who scored the contest’s first run
on a Trevor Mullins’ single up the middle. Back-to-back walks to
right fielder Justin Carter and centerfielder Mariotti to open
the third saw them both cross home plate. Carter scored on a
Cody Goins single and Mariotti scampered home on a Lineberry
fielder’s choice. Mullins was two-for-three, with a pair of
RBIs, for the Beavers, while Mariotti, Goins, Lightfoot, Siegel
and Carter recorded a safety apiece. Goins and Lineberry knocked
in a run each. Siegel finished the game with nine strikeouts.
The Beavers, now 10-15, will open sectional play Monday against
Pikeview at 6 pm at Bowen Field.

Renews Rivalry

The
annual Coppinger Tournament continues today at Bowen Field, and
what better match-up is there than a Bluefield vs. Princeton
showdown? Bluefield and Princeton haven’t met on the diamond
since 2010, and the Beavers would like to forget that game. The
Tigers had a very successful day at the plate and handed the
Beavers a loss. Today’s game should be quite interesting,
though. Princeton is the defending AAA state champions, but they
lost all but two starters from last year’s team. At five
o’clock, April 22nd, a rivalry renews.

The Beavers weren’t pleased when the James
Monroe Mavericks scored seven runs in the sixth inning to tie
the game with the Beavers 8-8. Instead of getting down, the
Beavers got runners on base in the seventh. Logan Lineberry got
the timely hit into left field, scoring Justin Mariotti from
second base to end the game 9-8. Justin Carter got the nod with
the start pitching 5 1/3 innings for Bluefield, striking out six
and walking seven. He gave up only three hits but six runs came
off him. Freshman reliever Randy Maxey struggled through his
first few batters, allowing a three-RBI double to Micah Deskins
and a two-run single to Reed McNeer, but got it together and
sealed the deal. Bluefield (5-9) plays Pikeview today at Bowen
